High Karat Exhibits at the
Museum Frieder Burda

January 19 – June 2, 2013

MATTA, fictions in the Museum Frieder Burda

Roberto Matta (1911 – 2002), whose works are represented in museums worldwide, is considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century. Matta traveled extensively through Europe and moved to Paris in 1933, where he met with leading members of the Surrealist movement. While living in Paris, the Chilean born artist met with comtemporaries such as Dali, Andrew Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Le Corbusier. The first true flowering of Matta’s own art came in 1938, when he moved from drawings to oil painting for which he is best known. This period coincided with his immigration to the United States where he lived until 1948.

June 15 – October 13, 2013

EMIL NOLDE at the Museum Frieder Burda

Emil Nolde (1867-1956) is known for his vigorous brushwork and expressive choice of colors. He was one of the first Expressionists and is considered to be one of the great oil and watercolor painters of the 20th century. Golden yellows and deep reds appear frequently in his work, giving a luminous quality to otherwise somber tones. His watercolors include vivid, brooding storm-scapes and brilliant florals.
